Adding Foliotek to Blackboard

Foliotek's LTI capabilities can be leveraged in Blackboard to provide students and faculty with easy access to their Foliotek Portfolios.  It is possible to create links that will take users to their account dashboard page or the link can be more specific and send the user directly to their Presentation Portfolios or Projects page.  For faculty, a link can be inserted that takes them directly to their evaluations for scoring.

Setting up the Foliotek LTI

First the LTI Building Block must be created which tells Blackboard how to access Foliotek's LTI tool

Here's how to do that:

Click on Building Blocks on the Blackboard System Admin screen.  It is in the Building Blocks section on the right side of the screen.

Building Blocks Link

Next, Select LTI Tool Providers from the Building Blocks screen.

On the next screen click on the Register Provider Domain button if you have not registered the Foliotek domain with Blackboard.  If you have already registered the domain, skip to the Managing Placements instructions.

Placing the link in Student and Faculty Accounts

Links to Foliotek can be placed in the left navigation menu in both student and faculty accounts for a particular course.  They can also be made available for use inside modules and assignments for a course.

Student Tool Options

The Student Tool option allows you to place the link to Foliotek in one of two places.  The link may be found in the Tools area from the Tools link in the left menu or a direct link to Foliotek can be placed in the left menu.  Follow the instructions below to make the placements.

Tools Area Link

You can place the link in the Tools area accessed from the left navigation menu in the student account.  With this, the student would click on 'Tools' and then have the Foliotek links as one of several options to select from.
Foliotek Link in Tools Area

In the Courses area on the System Admin screen, find the course for which you would like to add the Foliotek LTI links as tools.

Opening the Course Tools Editing Area

On the next screen, click on Tools in the left menu to open the Tools area.  Here you will see a list of all the Tools that are available.  The default setting is for the tool to be visible.  If you don't want it to be visible, click Hide Link and students will not be able to see it.

Showing Links in the Tools Area

Direct Menu Link

You can also place a link in the left navigation menu that goes directly to the area of Foliotek specified.  This option places a direct link in the student's left menu.  The student clicks the link and is taken to the part of Foliotek defined in the LTI.

Foliotek Left Menu Link

This link is placed in the student account from the Course Settings area It is found on the left side of the System Admin screen in the Courses section.  Once there, click on Course Menu and Structures.

Course Menu and Settings

Next, hover over the + above the current menu items.  When the dropdown opens, click on Tool Link.

Adding a Menu Link

Now Menu Link Optionsgive the link a name.  Be specific, like Foliotek Portfolios or Foliotek Dashboard, so the student knows exactly where the link goes.  For the Type, open the dropdown and select the particular Student Tool you wish to link to.  Check the box to make it available to users and click the Submit button.  This will add the link to the left menu for all users in all courses.

Content Type Link

This allows you to place all of the link to Foliotek on one 'content' page in the student's account.  With this, the user clicks one Foliotek link in the left menu and a page opens that can contain links to several different areas of Foliotek.

To add a content type link, find the course you would like to add it to in the Courses area of the System Admin screen.  Click on the name of the course with which you wish to work.

Next, click on Content in the left menu to open the Content area.

Content Type Page

Once in the Content area, hover over Build Content to open the dropdown menu, then click on Web Link.Building Content

Faculty Evaluations Link

For faculty accounts, you can place a link in the left menu or on a Content page that will take them directly to their evaluations area.  This makes the process of reviewing and completing evaluations much easier for your faculty.

To make these placements, follow the same instructions for adding links to student accounts as a Tools Area link, Direct Menu link, or Content Type link and label it as Evaluations or Foliotek Evaluations.  Any link you add through the administrator interface is automatically shown in both student and faculty accounts.  The Evaluations link, of course, is not necessary in the student account so you will want to hide it from the students.

Hiding a Tools Area Link

Click on Tools in the left menu.  This opens the Tools area and shows you which tools are available to students and faculty.  By clicking on the Hide Link button next to the Evaluations (or Foliotek Evaluations, or whatever you named it...) link, you can hide it in the student account.  The link will look different in the faculty but will still take the faculty member to their evaluations area in Foliotek.

Hiding Tools Area Link

Hiding a Direct Menu Link

Hover over the Evaluations (or Foliotek Evaluations, or whatever you named it...) link you placed in the left menu and open the dropdown menu by clicking on the arrow that appears.  Next, click Hide Link.  This will hide the link from students in the course, but will leave it visible in the faculty accounts.
